Rhino Chaser

and Cutback SUP

We have just finished the Big Wave SUP for Montreal Surfer, and pro-kiteboarder Julien Fillion to take to Maui for some big wave riding out there. Julien, the designer for Liquid Force is an established waterman (kayaker, surfer, kiteboarder and SUPer) and will be putting this board through the paces.

What is the Rhino Chaser?

Every surfer knows what a gun is, and when its needed. And its needed as much for SUP as any other surfing discipline. When its big and ugly, you want a board that will get you out, and put you on the waves, no matter what’s coming at you. Thats what the Rhino Chaser does.

But its really more of a semi-gun, because on the wave its a lot of fun. While staying ahead of the crashing wave is critical, we believe that you should also be able to have fun on the waves face.

The bottom runs from a single to double concave, before gradually leaving the rounded pintail in a shallow V. The rails themselves are of the S-rail type like the Cutback, so they don’t bounce out of the waves face when you really start cooking down the line, yet we’ve kept a little sweep to the outline so that you can still turn it well on the face and play.

Generous deck volume and a very pronounced nose rocker makes this board paddle out exceptionally well, while at the same time allowing you to drop in straight down the face of the steepest waves without pearling. The nose width is pulled in to reduce lift from wind rushing up the wave face, and to stop it snagging while driving turns from the center of the board.

This board is designed to make big wave surfing on an SUP really fun, and it does it!

Julien's is a 10'6" x 27" x 4 1/4"

We also made him a Cutback for surfing smaller waves - normal conditions. His is a 9' x 28" x 4 1/3", split (for easier transport - both the Rhino Chaser and the Cutback are split boards).

Here is some more info about the cutback:

Haven’t you always wanted to surf an SUP like it was a shortboard? Well, now you can! That’s what our cutback is all about!

The Cutback has essentially a shortboard outline and rocker shape, scaled up to the size of a SUP so it can be paddled effectively. Shortboard style 60/40 drop rails lead back into a small wing so the tail can release effectively, while the single bottom concave brings this fast onto a plane and lets you really drive through sections. Finally, generous thickness through the center of the board compensates for its reduced length and progressive template which naturally is less stable than a traditional outline.

Paddling out is not this boards strength. It’s surfing. Once you paddle onto the wave, and lock into the pocket, you’ll be throwing this around like it was your favorite shortboard: driving bottom turns, and dynamic smashes off the lip! Where you take it from here is up to you.
