Stand Up Paddling

in Montreal

Christine and Andreanne wanted to go for a SUP paddle on the Lachine Canal just outside the shop because it was about 20C and sunny, so I decided to tag along and get some pictures of them.

The canal stretches all the way from the Lachine Marina in Lachine, down to the old port od Montreal. We're located about two thirds of the way down, right in the area with all the new lofts and condo's, with grass parks on both sides and everyone from runners to bicyclers and roller bladers on the path, and groups having picknicks on the side of the waters edge.

Basically, it's a great scene, and fun to paddle down through the middle of it.

You have to pass several locks along the canal on your way down. They're closed right now so we cary around, but in summer this will be pretty neat.

Of course, the entire way down people stop us to ask what this is, how to do it, where to buy and rent SUP... pretty funny. But after all - it is accessible to everyone, so it makes sense, and it's a lot more fun than sitting inside a kayak for sure.

Anyway, the girls were having a great time, being silly and enjoying the sun. So much for a "work out" - it turned into something closer to "Comedy Central's paddling day out"!

Andreanne, on the left, has been SUP surfing at Habitat on the wave too, and is one of the instructors for the SUP classes we're giving this summer. Christine... well, she just likes to go out in the sun lol.

One thing is for sure, they were being cat called all the way down the canal to the old port.

Christine came to shore to grab a drink at the "depanneur" across the street, so Andreanne chilled out for a relax in the meantime.

Her board is also a wave surfing board and not as fast as Christines so she was pulling a little harder and deserved the rest.

I was on the new Stand Up 12 which is really wide and stable, so I wasn't worried about falling in, and its super fast and tracks well, so really it wasn't too bad keeping up even with all the camera gear in hand.

All in all, a fun day. I was scrambling to keep up, camer in hand, hoping not to fall in. That would have been fun - $10 000 worth of camera gear soaked in the Lachine Canal!

We're going out just about every day now - its an awesome workout, and I think we've found a way to paddle from the shop to the Habitat wave. If this works out it'll be awesome - no more burning gas to go surf!
