CURRENT
Design and development
Conception, and implementation of new kayak design
concepts for white water, touring and sea kayaking. My primary functions are to
assess market segments not currently addressed by the existing kayaks in our
line, and to create new designs to fill those segments, and secondly to
continue to innovate and create better designs for the market segments we
already have, so that we can maintain this customer base. A secondary task is the promotion of
these kayaks on the international competition stage, where I have successfully
taken 2 world championship medals using Riot kayaks.

Design and development
My primary task was the design and invention of new
kayak designs targeted specifically towards white water kayaking. The invention
of new concepts where necessary to seek or create new market segments, and to
fill the voids in our line for current market segments. As President of Savage
Designs, I also oversaw general operations and the smooth running of the
company. This included the understanding
and operation of the moulding machinery, the understanding of the materials
used, and their strengths and limitations. As a secondary function, I was also
responsible for the promotion of the kayaks on the international competitive
circuit, and successfully took a medal at the world championships using one of
my designs.

consultant
My primary duty
was to travel to destinations worldwide set by Prijon kayaks, and to promote
the kayaks as a professional athlete. During this time, I was both USA and
European champion, and took 8th at the world championships. As one
of their top athletes, I was also responsible for feeding the Research and Development
department ideas for new design concepts. In order to better understand the
manufacturing process used by Prijon, and its strengths and limitations, I
spent one month working in the factory on the blow-moulding machine, and in
assembly.

JUNE 1991 Designer
My task was to bring new design blood to the old and
well-established company. Perception was the leader of kayak manufacturing in
the early 1980Õs, but lost significant ground to new companies that were formed
mid decade. My job was to create new, innovative designs and put Perception
back at the top. I was responsible for what became the best selling white water
kayak to date at that time. I was also responsible for the design and
development of touring and sea kayaks.

JUNE 1986 Kayak Instructor, and expedition organiser
Starting out part time as a teenager, and then working
my way into a full time position as kayak instructor, and eventually trip
leader for the first commercial rafting and kayaking company in South Africa.
My duties involved the instruction of correct kayaking technique to beginners,
intermediates and advanced kayakers, the organisation of multi-day kayaking
expeditions, and the maintenance of equipment, including the creation of new
designs and equipment for use in the specific Southern African conditions.

DECEMBER 1992 Training and preparing for the Olympic games
During this time I remained virtually unemployed as I
trained full time for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Representing South
Africa, I toured the world competing in the world cup series, and finally at
the Olympics themselves in Barcelona, Spain. I was a finalist at the games, and
then retired from the category of Slalom Kayaking.
